Miss. Riza Ismail

Riza Ismail is the Senior Counsel (Banking & Finance) at Al Alawi & Co. 

Riza has spent over 15 years practicing in prestigious law firms in Australia, Malaysia, Kuwait and Oman. She graduated from the University of New South Wales, Australia with a double degree in accounting and law and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in Malaysia. She is also in the process of obtaining her qualification as a solicitor in England & Wales.

Riza specializes in banking and finance, with particular emphasis on Islamic finance, capital market (local and international bond and Sukuk issuances), project finance, corporate banking (bilateral and syndicated loans) and investment funds. She was recently involved and responsible for the successful closing of major and landmark transactions in Oman including Islamic finance transactions (among others, the debut Oman sovereign Sukuk issue, the first dual currency Sukuk issuance under the new Oman Sukuk Regulation and establishment of the first retail Sukuk programme and issuance of its first series Sukuk by Bank Muscat S.A.O.G.) and project finance transactions (among others, Ibri/ Sohar 3 independent power project, Salalah II independent power project and Phase 2 Expansion Project in Barka).

Riza was named as a “Next Generation Lawyer” and described as “highly recommended” by Legal500 EMEA 2018 and listed in the Chambers & Partners Guide to the Legal Profession (Chambers) in 2018 as an “Associate to Watch” for Islamic finance and capital markets. She has also been consistently cited by Chambers (2016 and 2017), Legal500 EMEA-Oman (consecutively for the years 2014-2017), Legal500 EMEA-Kuwait (2012) in the areas of banking and finance, project finance and Islamic finance.

Riza is a frequent contributor of Islamic finance articles to major finance and law publications such as the Islamic Finance News and International Financial Law Review.

Riza received her Bachelor of Accounting Degree with a merit from University of New South Wales (Sydney) in 1995, as well as  her Bachelor of Law Degree from New South Wales (Sydney) in 1997 and holds a Diploma in Sharia Law & Practice from International Islamic University (Malaysia) in 2003.

Riza’s practice languages are English and Bahasa Melayu (Malay).
